A is for Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Alpha Hydroxy Acids includes glycolic and lactic acids. AHAs are exfoliants which have the potential for improving hydration, reducing wrinkles, stimulating collagen production, and firming skin. They can also help to reduce discoloration from sun damage and the visible marks left after an acne breakout. They’re great if you have superficial pigmentation, the first signs of ageing, or you want to brighten a dull complexion.
B is for Beta Hydroxy Acid
Beta Hydroxy Acid is also known as Salicylic Acid. BHA is an exfoliant that can help to clear complexions, reduce inflammation and unclog pores. It can also help to reduce discoloration from sun damage and the visible marks left after an acne breakout. Ideal if you’ve got acne prone, oily skin.
C is for Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps protect your skin against damage from sun exposure and pollution. It’s used to help create firmer skin and reduce acne marks. You don’t need to use high concentrations of Vitamin C; research has shown that concentrations as low as 0.6% can be beneficial to your skin, and it can remain in the skin for 72 hours.
D is for Vitamin D
Vitamin D is vital for healthy bones, and there is evidence suggesting that it may even help prevent some cancers, arthritis and auto-immune diseases. The downside of Vitamin D is that the body produces it after exposure to sunlight, which not only damages the skin but is also carcinogenic. The British Association of Dermatologists advises against sunbathing for the sake of increasing Vitamin D levels – small amounts of activity in the sun which expose your face and arms should give you enough. Very few foods are naturally rich in Vitamin D, so look for fortified products or take supplements.
E is for Vitamin E
Vitamin E protects and repairs skin against the free radicals which damage collagen and cause wrinkles, fine lines and dry skin. Free radicals are produced by your body when the sun damages your skin. The website How Stuff Works has got a fun quiz about Vitamin E – see how much you know about it!
F is for Vitamin F
Vitamin F is made up of linoleic acid, an omega-6 essential fatty acid (EFA). Fortified Vitamin F is important for skin health, helping to protect it against skin deterioration and encourage healthy skin growth which is good for blemishes and scars.
