Acne
What is Acne?
Acne is common in both adolescents and adults. Acne is a skin condition that’s familiar to almost everyone, and at-home acne treatments are widely available. It is a condition that causes oily skin, blackheads and spots, usually when a person is going through hormonal changes such as during puberty or menopause.
These internal factors show themselves as:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules
The influences behind the development of the disease are:
- Increased size of the sebaceous gland and increased oil production.
- Increased production of skin cells; the body can’t shed these ‘extra’ cells fast enough and as a result, the sebaceous gland follicles become blocked.
- The blocked follicles become the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and swiftly become highly populated by “P.acnes bacteria”.
- As an immune response to the bacteria, the follicles become inflamed. This same response can also be stimulated by hormones, for example, at puberty.

It’s important to remember that there is no cure for acne, however, you can be helped to understand the disease, to manage it and limit the frequency and intensity of your breakouts. It is important to find a suitable skin regime to help you to control some of the factors that contribute to acne-prone and oily skin.
