Fraxel first pioneered true fractional-laser technology in 2002 to work below the skin’s surface to help address skin imperfections such as fine lines and wrinkles and other signs of skin ageing as well as scarring, sun damage and sunspots. Today, the Fraxel laser is one of the most sought-after, trusted fractional lasers available.
At The Skin to Love Clinic we are able to draw upon a huge wealth of expertise and experience as one of our practitioners is the trainer to other medical practitioners using this marketing-leading Fraxel laser in the UK and Europe.
Fraxel Dual treats only a fraction of your skin tissue at a time, targeting deep within the damaged part of your skin and leaving the tissue around it untouched which cleverly promotes rapid healing. This process allows your body to replace the old and damaged cells with healthy ones; creating fresh and radiant skin. The laser technology allows the skin to be treated at varying levels meaning that specific problems can be directly targeted, offering you the very best outcome which can be precisely repeated at each session.
Your practitioner can use the Fraxel laser to either target pigmentation or to target wrinkles and ageing skin, scarring or stretch marks. When targeting most pigmentation, we usually use the 1927nm wavelength which effectively targets sun spots, age spots, uneven pigmentation, ageing skin and other more superficial signs of ageing caused and/or made worse by UV exposure and the natural ageing process; it is even FDA approved to treat precancerous skin cells called Actinic Keratoses, commonly seen in sun-damaged skin. When we want to treat deeper signs of ageing such as wrinkles and crepey skin, scarring and stretch marks, the 1550nm wavelength is most commonly used. You can use a combination of both wavelengths if you have more than one concern.
The laser is a safe, non-invasive laser skin treatment that can give you a smoother, less blemished and a more youthful complexion. Unlike some other devices, the Fraxel Dual laser is FDA approved to treat anywhere on the body and face and can treat all skin types safely, without compromising the results. The most common areas where we treat signs of ageing with Fraxel Dual are areas which have had years of, often accidental, sun exposure includes the hands, face, neck and chest.
Indications that the Fraxel laser may be right for you:
– You would like to soften the appearance of scarring (that is at least 6 months old), including surgical scars and acne scarring.
– You would like to soften the appearance of stretch marks
– You have sun-damaged skin and you would like to improve its health and appearance.
– You would like to improve the appearance of sun/age-induced pigmentation; this does not include melasma.
– You are seeing natural signs of ageing, including lines, wrinkles, crepey and dull skin.
Possibly. We advise that when you have this treatment for the first time, plan it for when you don’t have any social or work commitments the next day or two so that you can better understand how your skin recovers without any pressure or anxiety about your recovery. Many patients will plan to have this treatment on a Friday evening or Saturday morning knowing that they have the weekend free; this normally suits their recovery.
For a better understanding of what your recovery may be like, take a look at our patients’ blog documenting her recovery of the Fraxel Dual 1927nm.
Usually, the minimum time we recommend between treatment sessions is a month. Your practitioner will assess your skin and your needs and make an individual recommendation for you.
Fraxel Dual has a great safety profile and at The Skin to Love Clinic we are able to draw upon a huge wealth of expertise and experience as one of our practitioners is the trainer to other medical practitioners using this laser in the UK and Europe.
Consultations are an important part of the treatment process in allowing you to understand the laser treatment and to establish if the benefits of the treatment are outweighed by any possible side effects. During a consultation, your concerns will be assessed. Your medical practitioner will be able to discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you, as well as any suitable alternative treatments.
Your practitioner will discuss any possible side effects, questions you may have and any aftercare you should adhere to prior to you having the treatment.
We will be able to give you specific advice during your consultation, however, this treatment can help if you have very sun-damaged, crepey skin and/or have other advanced signs of ageing such as deep wrinkles. It is not a substitute for surgical treatments.
You may need more than one treatment to achieve your results. You and your practitioner will create a treatment plan which may include using this treatment alongside other treatments.
There is no reason why those in their 30’s onwards shouldn’t consider the Fraxel laser treatment as a preventative treatment and maintain and improve healthy skin. Those who have had a lot of sun exposure may find this treatment especially beneficial.
There may be alternative treatments that may be more suitable for you depending on your concerns and skin condition, such as the Clear + Brilliant laser, which is by the makers of Fraxel Duel and considered to be the ‘baby Fraxel’ treatment. This can be discussed fully at your consultation.

No. of treatments
Dependent on your concern. You can have single sessions, but a course may be beneficial. This will be assed and discussed with you prior to treatment
30 to 40 minutes if treating the face. We usually recommend using an anaesthetic cream on the skin for 30 to 60 minutes prior to treatment, which would be applied in-clinic by one of our practitioners to ensure your comfort
Dependent on your concerns. You can expect to start seeing changes from approximately 4 days post treatment
Some patients will look flushed, with mild swelling immediately after treatment which usually subsides within 48 hours. A few days after the treatment your skin may start to feel a little rough, often described as ‘sandpapery’; this is usually only noticed by the patient and not by others and usually lasts no more than three to seven days. If you are specifically treating pigmentation, you may notice your skin takes on a bronzed appearance for a few days post treatment. Take a look at our patients’ blog documenting her recovery of the Fraxel Duel 1927nm
Resume usual activities
Most patients find that they can continue their usual activities after any swelling has subsided with the use of a tinted moisturiser. Full aftercare will be provided prior to treatment
Mild with the use of local anaesthetic cream. Patients liken the sensation to warm scratches
Duration of results
The results from the Fraxel treatment are progressive and accumulative; as this is not an ablative laser, most patients require more than one treatment. Patients notice results during the course of treatment however further improvement may be seen a few months following treatment as the deeper layers of skin continue to repair and heal
