Scarring

Scarring is the result of your body’s natural healing process after tissue has been damaged. These are extremely common marks which can fade naturally during the initial two years following their appearance, however it’s unlikely that after this suggested amount of time scarring will fade further without treatment.

Scars can occur for numerous reasons, including:

  • A side effect of skin conditions or disease, for example, acne or chicken pox.
  • Surgical cuts, for example, Caesarean sections or breast augmentations.
  • Accidental injuries, for example, cuts from falling over.
  • Self-harm.
  • Burns from hot liquid or objects.
  • Bites and scratches.
  • Piercings and tattoos.
  • Injections, for example, the BCG vaccination.

There are several types of scars and sometimes, when it comes to treatment, they need to be treated in different ways. It is worth noting that you can have various types of scars on your skin at one time, near one another, especially those resulting from acne. The types of scarring that can occur are:

  • Macular scars. These are flat, brown or red marks on the skin. They often appear as a result of acne.
  • Rolling scars. These scars are broad depressions in the skin with rounded, soft edges and are the often result of acne; several of these scars in close proximity to each other can give the skin a ‘rolling’ texture.
  • Boxcar scars. Similar to rolling scars in the sense that they create depressions in the skin but rather these scars have steeper, defined edges to them.
  • Ice-pick scars are deep and narrow scars. Some ice-pick scars can be extremely deep; they can look like an open pore. This type of scars are often associated with chicken pox and acne.
  • Atrophic scars. These can have a sunken appearance.
  • Contracture scars. This is often the result of a burn. The skin is taught which sometimes restricts movement.
  • Hypertrophic scars. Red, raised, sometimes lumpy scars which form along the site of a wound.
  • Keloid scars. This type of scar over-heals and continues to grow beyond the margins of the original wound. A keloid scar can appear after very minor trauma, sometimes even if no obvious damage has occurred. Hypertrophic scars are very commonly mistaken by patients for keloid scars. Due to the nature of this type scarring, it can be very difficult to treat, if treatable at all.

“Absolutely the Rolls-Royce of skin clinics! A thoroughly professional and highly skilled team. Definitely the best skin clinic experience I have ever had. I had just about exhausted every type of skin clinic and beauty salon to find help with my skin condition, but I’ve just found the best. The Skin to Love actually does care about YOU, they take the time to listen and fully understand the needs of their clients. I felt like visiting royalty, everyone is so lovely. I had a thorough, assessment of my skin, followed by an expert, impartial deliberation of what type of treatment that would help my skin problem, thus allowing me several options to consider with regard to different types of treatments, estimation of time for treatment, possible down time, costs and what I should expect during and after treatment. The emphasis was purely on me, the client. Not one single instance of trying to sell me skin products either. My only concern is that I have wasted many years and a small fortune trying to find someone who absolutely knows about skin. I wish I had found The Skin to Love years ago. Today, hopefully this is a new chapter, I feel so much more confident about the future of my skin – I’ve finally seen a beam of light at the end of the tunnel.” Denise

“I love coming to the skin to love clinic and I look forward to all my treatments as I always see amazing results at each visit. I suffer from acne scarring mainly around my cheek area, the treatments I have been having has made me feel more confident in my own skin. I didn’t think I would be able to get rid of these stubborn scars but I’m finally seeing improvements! It just makes me want to go back for more” Farrah

“Really good treatment, everyone is extremely nice and welcoming, would recommend it to people.” Nicola

“Thank you so much for looking after me today. Such a lovely team of ladies, making you feel welcome and comfortable. Absolutely delighted with the result of my treatment.” Rita

“It is great to have a professional opinion on the improvement of my skin and be able to look back and compare how it has improved over the time I have been visiting.  Thank you.” Carry

“When I came in I was really worried that I’d be judged about what I’d done to myself. I didn’t want perfect skin, I just wanted to be able to function normally; I was avoiding social situations. To not be judged or have someone make you feel that you disgust them was just lovely. I was the first time I could be honest and I was treated so compassionately.” Jayne

“Improving my skin is a journey, a marathon rather than a sprint and quick fix and one I have been delighted to be helped on by the Skin to Love Clinic. At every step of the way I have been given amazing advice and care, something I value highly.  I have no hesitation in recommending to them to my friends and family.  Thank you” Carey
