High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU for short, is a skin treatment for those who have skin sagging, creepiness, and other signs of skin ageing; one of the best-known brands of HIFU is Ultherapy.
Although the HIFU facial is super popular at our Hertfordshire HIFU skin clinic, you can also have HIFU treatments on the neck, chest, or body which sometimes surprises some people. We're often asked questions about HIFU, especially in-clinic during the consultation as many people have heard about its skin tightening benefits. This guide is going to give you many of our FAQs all in one place, alongside expert commentary from Nurse and founder of The Skin to Love Clinic in St.Albans, to make your research a little easier.
What is HIFU Treatment (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)?
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-surgical skin treatment which is used to tighten, smooth, and firm your skin. During the HIFU skin tightening treatment, HIFU energy quickly causes the treated tissue to warm up. This heat creates something called a thermal injury which tricks the body into repair mode, thus producing new collagen and elastin.
“The treatment can target different depths of your skin, from the top layer down to the SMAS which is a mesh that lays over the top of your muscle, which results in tighter, firmer, and smoother skin.” Adds Nurse Jane.
The HIFU Journey: What to Expect
"Your HIFU experience begins with a personalised consultation in our CQC regulated, Save Face accredited clinic in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.” Nurse Jane explains. “Your medical practitioner will assess your skin’s unique needs and develop a plan with you that feels right. Should you agree on the HIFU treatment as part of your plan, on the day of your session, your provider will apply a conductive gel and gently and methodically place the HIFU handpiece over the targeted areas. Most patients describe the sensation as tolerable heat pulses or ‘zingers’; your practitioner will work with your unique tolerance level to make you as comfortable as possible.”
Treatment plans are created using practitioner expertise and experience so plans will be made entirely for you as an individual, nevertheless, a course of HIFU is usually required and the details of that will be discussed during consultation.
HIFU Results: When Will I See My HIFU Results?
“On average, full results are seen around three months after you've finished your course of HIFU. Results largely depend on your body's ability and speed and producing new collagen that the treatment has stimulated. In some cases, it can take up to 6 months to see your full outcome.” says Nurse Jane.
Immediately post treatment, your skin will likely appear flushed and may feel mildly tender; these effects typically subside within a few hours. The real magic unfolds over the next three to six months as your collagen network progressively remodels itself.
Some people may notice a subtle improvement a few days following the treatment, known as the ‘collagen contracture’ stage. Results are dependent on the individual’s own skin-repairing mechanism during which collagen production is stimulated and formed which can take several months. “Knowing this, it is advisable to plan the HIFU treatment in advance of an event that you wish to see results in time as full results are not immediate.” Nurse Jane mentions. “As with many aesthetic treatments, lifestyle can have an impact on the results so we always recommend that you follow safe sun habits and a balanced diet, as well as try to address your stress levels.”
