So, What is Profhilo?

The treatment is made of injectable hyaluronic acid (much like a dermal filler) which improves skin quality and treats skin laxity. Profhilo is produced in a special way which means not only does it hydrate and act like scaffolding within the skin, it also triggers a response in the tissue known as ‘bio-remodelling’ which smooths, tightens and gives your skin an inner glow. Literally.

In short, the treatment remodels skin laxity and battles crepiness. It is not a replacement for fillers and Botox and can be used in combination with these other treatments or as a stand-alone treatment. Profhilo benefits the skin quality rather than the muscle movement which causes wrinkles (Botox treats this) or for the loss of volume in the fat pads and filling specific lines (fillers treat these concerns).

What is bio-remodelling?

This is a process that is triggered in the skin to create lots of new, bouncy collagen and elastin which helps to combat the signs of skin ageing such as lines and wrinkles, crepiness, and dull, thinning skin and improves skin laxity and encourages skin rejuvenation.

How Does It Work?

Profhilo uses an incredibly pure form of synthetic hyaluronic acid which is injected strategically into the upper layers of the skin with a very small needle. Unlike hyaluronic acid used in filler treatments, this hyaluronic acid is very runny (think honey-like) and effortlessly disperses into the skin where it has a ‘scaffolding’ action on the tissues, hydrates and begins its bio-remodelling process to improve skin laxity.

How long does Profhilo take to work?

The results aren’t immediate as this is a 2-part treatment; each session is 30 days apart from one another. In those 30 days after each session, your skin works hard, producing new, bouncy collagen and elastin to give your skin a firmer, smoother, plumper complexion. Full results are seen only after the second session as your skin produces more and more collagen and elastin, however, changes are often noticed after the first session.

What is the difference between Profhilo and dermal filler?

The only similarity between dermal fillers and Profhilo is that they’re both made from natural hyaluronic acid which is injected into your tissues.

Fillers are quite thick hyaluronic acid gels used to restore volume and definition to areas such as cheeks and lips, as well as smooth out specific wrinkles such as nose-to-mouth lines. Profhilo has a runnier consistency than fillers and is injected only into the upper layers of skin to hydrate and have a ‘scaffolding’ effect within the skin, as well as improve the quality of your skin thanks to its ability to trigger bio-remodelling.

The Times beauty journalist, Olivia Falcon, describes it brilliantly: “Imagine your skin is a bed: rather than plumping up the pillows (the effect fillers have on the skin), Profhilo increases the thread count of the sheets (your skin).”

What do I look like after the treatment?

There is no downtime; immediately after the procedure, you can see small bumps, much like an insect bite or bee sting, at the site of the injection. These are very easy to cover usually and can take up to 24 hours to settle. Just a single course will show significant tissue improvement due to the chemical cross-linking agents profhilo stimulates in your skin.

The innovative injection technique used during a Profhilo treatment means that only 5 small injections are needed on each side of the face meaning that the treatment is quick and comfortable. Some adverse reactions reported in these cosmetic procedures include bruising or prolonged swelling. However, prolonged swelling occurs rarely due to the very fine needles used in the treatment sessions.

Is Profhilo safe?

The treatment is biocompatible due to its pure grade hyaluronic acid which is free of additives, therefore reducing side effects and offering greater safety. To date, over a million treatments have been administered all over the world and nobody has had a serious reaction to the treatment.

Despite the incredibly high hyaluronic acid content it has a low inflammatory profile, and pro-healing properties and is backed by clinical studies.
