Most of us have that one "stubborn" area. It doesn't matter how well we eat or how much we exercise; that small pocket of fat simply will not move. It might be under the chin, around the bra line, or on the inner knees.
At The Skin to Love Clinic, we don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. We have a vast suite of different body contouring treatments because every body is different. While some people need to treat larger areas of fat, others need something much more precise. This is where fat dissolving injections (like DesoBody and DesoFace) become the perfect tool for the job.
Here’s a quick guide on fat dissolving injections with expert opinions from Independent Nurse Prescriber and fat dissolving specialist, Natalia Ostrowska, from The Skin to Love Clinic in St. Albans.
Do Fat Dissolving Injections Actually Work?
It is the question we hear most often when it comes to fat dissolving: "Do fat loss injections work, or is it just a trend?" The answer depends entirely on the product being used. You may have seen "Lemon Bottle" fat dissolving all over social media a few years ago. While it became a huge trend on TikTok, it lacked the deep clinical data that medical professionals look for.
At our St Albans clinic, we use Deso. Unlike some "fad" products, Deso is a medical-grade treatment with data to support its efficacy and safety. It uses a special ingredient (Sodium Deoxycholate) that is already found in your body. When we inject it into the fat, it breaks down the wall of the fat cell. Once the cell is broken, the fat is gone for good and is naturally cleared away by your body.
This is not a weight-loss injection which works as a tool to help you lose weight, fat-dissolving directly targets stubborn pockets of fat that you want to reduce in isolation. You can read more about both types of treatments here.
So, do fat dissolving injections work? Yes. When they are medical-grade and performed by experts.
Freezing vs. Dissolving: Which One is for You?
At Skin to Love, we use both medical-grade fat freezing (Cryolipolysis) and fat removal injections, as well as other types of treatments. Here is the simple way to know which one you might need:
“Crystal fat freezing is our "bulky fat pocket" solution. It’s best for larger areas, commonly the main tummy area or the thighs.” explains nurse Natalia. “Deso fat dissolving on the other hand is our solution for the face and in some body areas that have less ‘bulk’, typically for patients who have a lower percentage of body fat. Because it is an injection, we can target very small and or awkward spots that a fat-freezing machine cannot reach or fat freezing is inappropriate for.”
Common areas for these "fat removal injections" include:
- Double Chins: To sharpen the jawline.
- Bra Fat: The small pockets around the underarms.
- Inner Knees: To smooth the shape of the legs.
Realistic Results: What to Expect
If you are looking at fat removal before and after photos, it is important to remember that your body needs time for the treatment to work.
- The Treatment: We use a very fine needle to place the solution. Most people say it feels like a small pinch and/or a tingle.
- The Swelling: This is the most important part! Because the "fat melting treatment" is actively breaking down cells, the area will swell. The treated area will look a bit bigger for a few days before it settles, and your body gradually starts the process of removing the fat. Swelling is to be expected.
- The Reveal: Most will start to see the "fat burning injections" working after about 3 to 4 weeks post treatment but, in many cases, this will not be the full result; most people need 2 to 4 sessions to get the result they want. This would be assessed and discussed with you during a consultation so that you fully understand what your treatment would look like.
