The quest for the perfect nose has evolved, and today, it doesn’t always require a scalpel and surgery. Non-surgical nose jobs, also known as liquid nose jobs, have taken the cosmetic world by storm as a possible alternative to surgery. Today, we will delve into the fascinating realm of non-surgical nose jobs, exploring what they are, how they work, their safety, longevity, and why they are becoming a popular choice for those seeking to change aspects of their nose or nose imperfections and, seeing as you’re here, you may very well be one of those weighing up their treatment options.
Understanding Non-Surgical Nose Jobs
A Modern Approach
The non-surgical nose job is a quick procedure, often taking around 30 minutes, that can smooth bumps and dips on the nose, lift the nasal tip, and improve asymmetry.
This approach differs from the traditional surgical approach because, you guessed it, there is no surgery involved. Nope, not a scalpel in sight. This means that there is no need to be put to sleep during the procedure like you will be during surgery, and therefore avoiding that particular risk.
The non-surgical nature also means that nothing will be cut or removed during the treatment; with surgical rhinoplasty bone, cartilage, and skin may be removed to achieve your desired outcome, which is not the case with the non-surgical rhinoplasty. This is beneficial because it means you avoid the risks and downtime associated with the more dramatic surgical nose job, however, it does mean that the non-surgical nose job has limitations to what it can do; it is not going to be for you if you require major changes to your nose, such as making it smaller.
Non-surgical nose jobs, (also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty or a liquid nose job) are minimally invasive. They require the use of a needle which means that although you can expect a quicker recovery time than traditional rhinoplasty, there are still some risks such as bruising and swelling.
Liquid Nose Job Magic
Ok, so it’s not actually magic. In our case, it’s a medical practitioner with years (sometimes decades) of experience with this highly skilled technique. The magic really lies in the skill and artistry of the practitioner to be able to see where the fillers need to be placed, and being able to safely execute it, to address your specific concerns.
Yes, you did read that bit right… The non-surgical nose job uses dermal fillers (which technically have a gel-like consistency rather than a liquid consistency) to improve imperfections on the nose.
This technique, much like all dermal filler treatments, offers immediately visible results, usually with minimal downtime. Browse our non surgical rhinoplasty before and after pictures and see for yourself.
Is It Safe?
Trust in Skilled Hands
As you may have already discovered during your research, all treatments come with possible risks and potential complications. These risks are reduced when performed by trained and experienced practitioners. At our Hertfordshire-based clinic, this treatment is only ever performed by a medical practitioner who has undergone additional training in this specific treatment technique.
The reason we only ever allow medical practitioners to perform dermal filler treatments is because, firstly, they can offer you a comprehensive non-surgical nose job consultation; a key starting point where they can assess if you’re a good candidate and fully understand your medical background and identify any contraindications or considerations. Secondly, our medical practitioners have an extensive understanding of the anatomy and how to safely treat the face. Additionally, and importantly, as medical practitioners they are equipped to deal with complications that require them to act quickly and effectively and may require access to medication. Complications are extremely rare in trained and experienced hands, but not impossible so we feel it’s vital that our practitioners can act swiftly, effectively, and safely should they ever need to.
Potential Risks and Rare Complications
As this procedure requires the use of a needle, it’s reasonable to expect some temporary swelling and possible bruising following a non-surgical nose job procedure. It would be advisable to plan your treatment for a time that you can allow a few days of recovery time, without social pressure, should you experience swelling. Should you want this treatment in time for a big event, always plan it with enough time to recover from any swelling and bruising (which will last the same amount of time as a normal bruise tends to last). Who needs the stress and worry that your bruise hasn’t gone in time?
There are more rare and serious possible complications which, again, the risk can be reduced in competent hands, but are possible. As with all dermal fillers, there is the rare possibility of a vascular occlusion. This is a blockage of a blood vessel by dermal filler which has inadvertently been injected into it-one of the reasons why your practitioner needs to have a thorough understanding of the facial anatomy. A blockage in the blood vessel can impede the blood flow to the surrounding tissue and requires immediate attention, otherwise, this can lead to tissue damage or, in severe cases, tissue death (technically called necrosis).
This sounds awful, I know, but I’d like to stress that this is a rare complication and competent, qualified medical practitioners are trained to immediately recognise the signs of an occlusion and take action quickly.
One of the ways to treat this complication is by injecting it with a prescription-only medication called hyaluronidase. This is an enzyme which quickly breaks down hyaluronic acid, which dermal fillers are made from. This allows the blood flow to return to the tissues.
Your choice of practitioner should not only be based on the results they can offer you but also on their ability to respond quickly and effectively in the rare situation that a complication arises.
How Long Does It Last?
Temporary Transformation
The non-surgical nose job offers temporary results. As with any treatment that involves the use of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, the results will gradually dissipate as the body has enzymes that break hyaluronic acid down. This means that should you like to maintain your non-surgical nose job results, you’ll need additional treatments further down the line. Read more about how long does non-surgical rhinoplasty last in our blog.
If you are not willing to maintain your results but still want to address the concerns that you have with your nose, it may be worthwhile exploring a surgical nose job which offers permanent results.
Maintenance and Repeat Procedures
So, you’ve had your non-surgical nose job done and you LOVE the results. Great news! So now what? First and foremost, enjoy. Secondly, ensure that you discuss with your practitioner when they suggest you come back for further treatment to maintain your results. They may even be able to give you an approximate longevity from their experience; this may give you a rough idea of when you may require your maintenance treatment but do keep in mind that everyone is different.
Ideal Candidates and Expectations
The Desire for Minor Changes
The ideal candidate for the non-surgical nose job is someone who does not require or desire major changes to their nose.
Surgical rhinoplasty is likely to be a better fit if you require big changes such as making your nose smaller or correcting issues with your breathing. Non-surgical rhinoplasty does not remove tissue so it will not be able to offer you these types of changes.
You may be a good candidate for non-surgical rhinoplasty if you:
- have realistic expectations about what this treatment can achieve; your practitioner should be able to give you a better understanding of this during a consultation.
- are in good health.
- require minor changes to the appearance of your nose such as lifting a minor droop in the tip of your nose, smoothing some lumps and bumps, or would like to improve asymmetry.
- understand and are happy that you’ll have to have maintenance treatments to continue enjoying your results as it is not a permanent treatment.
Realistic Expectations
As I just mentioned, you must manage your expectations of this treatment otherwise you may not be satisfied with the results.
Discuss what your ideal outcome from the treatment is. You must be honest. Your practitioner should then be able to inform you whether the non-surgical nose job can achieve this for you. If your expectations and the results do not match, you may like to consider having a consultation with a surgeon to discuss a surgical nose job.
As previously mentioned, non-surgical nose jobs can be transformative, however, the procedure does have limitations, so it’s important for you to go into it knowing what you will get from it. Non-surgical treatments tend to offer less dramatic results than their surgical alternatives.
The Procedure Experience
Minimal Discomfort
There is minimal discomfort during the non-surgical rhinoplasty procedure. You are likely to feel a scratch as the needle enters and you may feel some pressure as the product is placed. This should not be painful. Some people hear little noises as the product is placed but this is not loud or frightening.
The dermal fillers we use at our Hertfordshire clinic contain local anaesthetic for extra comfort.
Treatment is usually quite quick, roughly half an hour which is good news if you’re new to the treatment or are nervous about it.
Recovery and Post-treatment Care
As the local anaesthetic wears off in the hours following your nose may feel a little tender to the touch. Within 24 hours of your treatment, it is quite likely that you’ll experience some swelling, particularly if your treatment was extensive; this is transient and should start to resolve within a few days. If you can take painkillers safely, then over-the-counter ones will suffice should you decide that you need them.
Additionally, you may use a cold compress on your nose, very gently, to help with any swelling; avoid pressing down on your nose when using the compress as you risk distorting the filler during this settling period. You will also want to use a light touch to avoid making any discomfort worse.
Bruising in the area is possible so it’s always best to go into the treatment expecting for this to happen so that you don’t plan your treatment too close to a social event where you would be conscious of a bruise. You may not experience any bruising but you should be prepared that it can happen.
If you do experience a bruise, this will last as long as any normal bruise lasts for you. You may be able to reduce the intensity and its recovery time with arnica cream (a homoeopathic solution) but always check that it is safe for you to do so e.g. that it doesn’t interact with any medication that you’re on.
Additionally, it’s advisable to avoid alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours before your treatment as alcohol thins your blood and can increase your likelihood of bruising. Unless you require them for a medical reason, and for the same reason as avoiding alcohol, it’s a good idea to avoid other blood thinners such as fish oil supplements, aspirin, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for a few days leading up to your treatment; please consult with your practitioner and your GP or the health practitioner who prescribed you the drugs before making any changes to how you take prescription drugs.
You may also wish to avoid strenuous exercise immediately before your treatment. Vigorous exercise will increase your blood flow and may make you more likely to bruise.
Your non-surgical nose job practitioner should happily discuss aftercare and possible side effects with you before having the treatment and if there is anything that you want to ask or are concerned about afterwards, do contact them.
Is It Worth It?
Weighing the Benefits
There are many benefits to the non-surgical nose job; a quick procedure, minimal recovery, it’s reversible, and it avoids many of the risks that come with surgery. But as we all know, wherever there are pros, there are also cons. Do the cons outweigh the pros? That is for you to decide.
For some, the risk of the possible side effects outweighs their desire for the outcome of the treatment. For others, the opposite is true. Your job is to get as much information as possible about the treatment before deciding so that you can make an informed choice. Considerations to Keep in Mind
My top tips when considering the non-surgical nose job are:
- Research the treatment. Google is a fantastic starting point in your journey. However, do keep in mind that there will be some information out there that isn’t factually accurate.
- A consultation is a key part of your journey. This is the time when you can have your questions answered, as well as be assessed to see if you are a good candidate for the treatment. You should be able to get a good feel for your practitioner during this consultation too, it’s important that you feel listened to, have your queries addressed, and get an understanding of how comfortable you’ll be with them treating you. Please don’t overlook this part of your journey in your excitement to have the treatment and I would go as far as to say, that if someone offers you a non-surgical nose job without a consultation prior, with time to go home and digest all the information they should be giving you, this should raise a red flag.
- Ask what type of fillers your practitioner plans on using; the beauty of hyaluronic acid-based fillers is that they’re not permanent and are reversible. There are lots of counterfeit and poor-quality fillers available; most respectable medical practitioners will only use high-quality, well-respected filler brands and source them from legitimate sources.
The world of non-surgical nose jobs is a testament to modern cosmetic innovation. Offering immediate, visible results with minimal downtime, these procedures have changed the way we view enhancements to the nose. Safety is paramount, and with the guidance of skilled practitioners, individuals can achieve their desired outcome without going under the knife.
Whether you seek subtle refinements or want to test the waters before committing to permanent surgical changes, non-surgical nose jobs provide a transformative solution.
