7. Does Sculptra Treatment Produce An Immediate Result?
You might notice an immediate ‘plumping’ after your Sculptra treatment. This is from the sterile water used to carry the PLLA particles. This isn’t a true result (which is why you should also check that any before and after photos you look at aren’t from immediately after treatment); this immediate plumping is transient and usually subsides by 72 hours.
The true results from collagen formation begin around 6 weeks post treatment, with peak results three to six months after your last session and are long-lasting.
Sculptra is possibly not for you if you want a quick ‘fix’, but it is worth being patient for if you want longer-term, natural-looking results.
8. Am I A Good Candidate For Sculptra?
Sculptra can be a very effective treatment for men and women, but especially for women aged 35 plus who are experiencing thinning skin and/or facial lipoatrophy (loss of fat). It can be a super choice for those experiencing hormonal transitions, such as perimenopause, where the sudden drop of oestrogen results in a rapid decline in collagen and skin quality.
Sculptra is also a good option for those who have lost lots of weight which has led to changes in the facial structure and how the skin sits on top of it as a result; helping to counteract the ’deflated’ appearance sometimes associated with rapid weight loss.
9. How Many Sessions Of Sculptra Are Recommended By Your Skin Clinic?
Treatment sessions and how many vials of Sculptra required are different. Most patients will have 2 to 3 treatment sessions. These sessions are usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow for the gradual, layered build of collagen that Sculptra is known for.
The number of vials used across these treatment sessions will depend on your age and baseline skin quality. As a loose guide, most patients will need at least one vial of Sculptra per decade of life. So, an ‘average’ 50-year-old could expect to have at least 5 vials spread across 2 to 3 sessions. Of course, this is not personalised advice, and a treatment plan would be tailored to you during a consultation and assessment.
10. How Long Do Sculptra Results Last?
Sculptra is one of the longest-lasting non-surgical treatments currently available.
Having followed patients for 25 months, pivotal clinical studies show that the majority of patients maintained significant aesthetic improvements throughout that 25-month period5. We don’t have clinical data on the longevity beyond 25 months purely because that was the pre-determined end date of the trial.
Results don’t ‘wear off’, they age with you. Because Sculptra results are your own tissue, they only degrade as you continue to age naturally.
11. What Is The 5-5-5 Rule & Is It Really Necessary?
Following each Sculptra session, you should be advised to massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days.
This 5-5-5 protocol ensures that the PLLA particles are evenly dispersed within the tissue to prevent the formation of small, palpable nodules. This is best practice and it’s highly advisable that you follow this aftercare instruction.
Sculptra has been around for decades and, naturally, best practices and techniques have evolved over time. Modern reconstitution methods (preparation of the sterile water for injection and the PLLA by your practitioner) have reduced the risk of complications, however the 5-5-5 protocol remains best practice to prevent the formation of nodules.
You might be wondering how you’ll fit the 5-5-5 protocol into your busy life, however from extensive experience, our patients find this aftercare easy to follow. A tip would be to do 3 of your 5 massage sessions around mealtimes (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and the remaining 2 could be done at any other convenient time, for example when you brush your teeth.
12. Are there any side effects from Sculptra?
All treatments, from beauty treatments through to surgical treatments, have potential side effects so it stands to reason that medical-aesthetic treatments carry them too. Potential side effects from the Sculptra injection process include:
More rarely6, small lumps (nodules) or granulomas can form under the skin. Choosing a Care Quality Commission regulated clinic and a medical practitioner ensures that your practitioner is equipped to manage these rare occurrences using medical protocols. It’s also highly advisable that you follow the 5-5-5 aftercare protocol to help reduce the likelihood of nodules forming.
13. How Does Sculptra Compare To Profhilo?
This is a frequent comparison that patients of ours, often who currently have Profhilo, ask about.
Profhilo and Sculptra target different layers of the skin. To put it very simplistically, Profhilo is probably better suited to a younger patient who is being proactive in their skincare or who are noticing earlier signs of skin ageing (although we have achieved some good results with more advanced signs of ageing).
- Profhilo is a high-concentration of hyaluronic acid that has a liquid, honey-like consistency. As it spreads through the treated tissue it very deeply hydrates, triggers collagen stimulation, and improves the ‘glow’ in the superficial layers of the skin.
- Sculptra works deeper within the treated tissues to provide deeper structural support and skin volume. In our experience, Sculptra has a more dramatic rejuvenation effect with much longer-lasting results.
- We’d suggest that you don’t directly compare the two treatments as they’re not like-for-like. However, they can be very complimentary when used in tandem; Sculptra regenerating the ‘foundations’ of the skin, and Profhilo for the finishing touch.
14. Can Sculptra Be Used With Other Treatments To Achieve Natural Results?
Yes. This would be tailored to your precise needs, but our clinical experience shows Sculptra working beautifully in combination with energy-based treatments such as Thermage; we love this combination so much that we’ve built our signature treatment around it. Another good example is the combination of Sculptra and resurfacing treatments, such as Fraxel Dual; Sculptra addresses the loss of structural volume and triggers deep tissue regeneration, laser resurfacing addresses surface texture, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, providing a multi-dimensional approach.
A multi-treatment approach such as these is currently the gold standard approach in aesthetic medicine. Ageing is multifaceted with bone, fat, and skin changing simultaneously; it stands to reason that your treatment plan should ideally approach more than one of these natural changes to give you the ultimate result.
