As the demand for HIFU Liposonix grows, many patients ask: does Liposonix work for permanent fat reduction? The clinical answer is a clear yes...
In the global landscape of non-surgical body contouring, few names carry as much weight as Liposonix. At our Hertfordshire clinic, we’ve watched fads come and go, but Liposonix has been a cornerstone of our body-shaping suite since 2013. Why? Because it delivers a safe reduction in stubborn adipose tissue that even the most disciplined lifestyles often struggle to reduce.
As a CQC-regulated clinic, we only ever offer treatments that have efficacy and safety data sitting behind them. Below we address the most frequent questions we’ve received over the years, alongside commentary from our Nurse Jane, the former EMEA trainer for Liposonix, providing the clinical clarity you need.
What exactly is Liposonix and how does it work?
Liposonix is a non-invasive, medical grade treatment that uses High-Intensity Focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to disrupt treated fat cells, allowing the body to permanently remove them.
“Think of the technology like a magnifying glass focusing sunlight. Liposonix uses the ultrasound energy and creates a concentrated point of thermal energy at a precise depth of 1.3cm within the fat layer,” Nurse Jane, former Liposonix trainer, explains. “It passes harmlessly through the skin and concentrates its energy to destroy the fat cells.”
Following the treatment your body’s lymphatic system naturally processes and removes the destroyed fat cells over several weeks. Unlike some treatments that simply shrink the targeted fat cells, Liposonix works with your body to remove them for good.
Does Liposonix really work?
The answer is a resounding yes.
Nurse Jane, former EMEA Liposonix trainer adds, “This isn’t just our observation. Multiple studies have found that a single [Liponsonix] treatment resulted in statistically significant reductions in waist circumference."
Here are a few clinical studies, if you’d like to deep-dive a little more:

The efficacy and safety of HIFU Liposonix
As with most medical-grade treatments, patient compliance is key when it comes to results. We know that the technology works and that there are clinical studies supporting its safety and effectiveness however; if a patient overeats or becomes more sedentary, putting on weight, the fat cells that remain can get bigger, like they would anywhere on the body; this would impact on the patient's result.
Again, with any treatment, there are incidences of patients being true “nonresponders”, although this is unusual in our experience.
“Should the patient have a BMI greater that 27, they may not see the impact of the treatment in the same way a patient with a lower BMI may; it may be that such patient would require more than one treatment session or to consider an alternative treatment better suited to denser pockets of fat.” Nurse Jane explains. “Your consultation should clarify if you are a good candidate for Liposonix and/or any alternative therapies.”
Skin tightening HIFU vs fat melting HIFU: will it have undesired effects?
This is a crucial question and one that, rightly, comes up researching ‘HIFU Liposonix’. There’s often confusion about what the technology does and how it can tighten skin in one breath and destroy fat in the other.
This is all about the nuances. It’s important to understand that HIFU doesn’t reach just one depth. Facial HIFU for skin lifting is calibrated to a shallower depth and different intensity to target the SMAS layer; a connective layer that covers the muscle to cause a contraction of these tissues, not to target fat.
Liposonix for body fat uses a higher intensity, ‘macro-focused’ energy intensity. HIFU for this purpose is carefully designed to reach deep adipose tissue (typically 1.3cm) to thermally destruct the fat cells effectively, without damaging the skin above.
“It’s all about where the energy 'parks' itself. Imagine HIFU like a spotlight. As the light passes through the air, it doesn't cause heat. It only creates heat at the exact spot where the beam is focused into a tiny, sharp point. In facial treatments, we focus that point on the SMAS,” Nurse Jane, former EMEA Liposonix trainer, explains. “In Liposonix, we focus it deep in the fat. The layers in between remain perfectly safe because the energy is simply passing through them, not concentrating within them.”
At our CQC-regulated Hertfordshire clinic, you can rest assured that your facial lifting treatments are never performed at the fat-destroying depth, not your body contouring at the same level as the skin lifting treatments.
