Melasma is often a misunderstood pigmentation concern. It can appear suddenly and stubbornly, often resisting over-the-counter products and becoming more obvious in the sunnier seasons. Naturally, many women seek what sounds like the more powerful solution: melasma laser treatment. But whilst lasers are widely advertised for melasma removal, they may not always be the most effective or safest choice. At The Skin to Love Clinic, melasma treatment is tailored individually, with options including prescription skincare such as Obagi Nu-Derm® and, in suitable cases, gentle laser treatments like Clear + Brilliant® following consultation.
Let me explain why.
At our Hertfordshire skin clinic, we have deep expertise in laser technology. In fact, our MD, Nurse Jane, was the UK, European, and Middle Eastern trainer for some of the world's leading lasers. So, when we tell you that we don’t use laser for melasma, despite having the technology and experience to do so, it’s because we choose safety and results.
Here’s what you need to know about laser treatment for melasma, and why our first line of treatment is often something entirely different.
What Is Melasma and What Causes It?
Melasma is a skin condition often characterised by symmetrical patches of hyperpigmentation, usually appearing on the upper lip, cheeks, chin, and/or forehead (not always all of them at the same time). It’s especially common in women aged 30 to 501, particularly those darker skin tones, (Fitzpatrick type III-V)2.
Melasma Triggers include:
Hormonal changes: Contraceptive use, pregnancy, perimenopause, post menopause.
Genetics
Hypothyroidism
Additionally, factors such as inflammation and sun (UV) exposure, and skin sensitivity can exacerbate melasma3.
Nurse Natalia, our clinic’s melasma lead explains: “Melasma isn’t just a pigmentation issue. It’s a condition deeply connected to hormones and inflammation4. It requires careful, expert management, not just a quick fix.”
Melasma and Laser Treatments: What You Need to Know
Treating melasma requires a gentle and highly individualised approach. While some laser treatments can trigger inflammation or make pigmentation worse, others, when used conservatively and under expert supervision, can help to safely improve skin clarity.
At The Skin to Love Clinic, every melasma case is carefully assessed during consultation to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for your unique skin.
In many instances, we recommend medical-grade skincare such as Obagi Nu-Derm®, which helps to target hyperpigmentation and restore balance to the skin. However, in selected cases, our practitioners may also suggest gentle laser treatments such as Clear + Brilliant®, which can be beneficial for improving overall tone and texture when clinically suitable.
Our priority is always to treat melasma safely and effectively, using a personalised approach that protects your skin barrier and minimises the risk of pigmentation rebound.
