What Are Polynucleotides?
They may well be a newer name in medical-aesthetics, but polynucleotides’ skin-repairing benefits are backed by lots of medical research. Polynucleotides were originally used in medicine to help a number of concerns, such as joint restoration, before being used in aesthetics where they’ve been making waves for their ability to heal, restore, and strengthen the skin at a deep, cellular level.
Unlike Profhilo, which primarily firms the skin and deeply hydrates, polynucleotides treatment works by reducing inflammation, repairing DNA, and stimulating fibroblast activity in the skin (the skin cells that are responsible for collagen and elastin regeneration).
Polynucleotides are derived from highly purified DNA fragments, usually from salmon or trout. These DNA fragments have been shown to improve overall skin texture, accelerate the skin's natural repair process, and reduce skin redness. This makes them a fabulous injectable treatment option for compromised skin and/or ageing skin.
Who Are Polynucleotide Treatments For?
Polynucleotides could be your skin care secret weapon if you’re struggling with scars, ageing, or fragile skin. Polynucleotides are especially effective for:
- Restoring skin elasticity in those noticing thinning skin and laxity.
- Strengthening sensitive, reactive skin, such as those with rosacea or previous skin damage.
- Scar healing-including acne scars and post-surgical scars.
- Rejuvenation around the eye-including undereye hollows.
- Increasing overall skin health and your skins collagen production.
Polynucleotides are usually done in a course of three treatments spaced about a month apart. The results develop gradually as your skin’s natural repair and rejuvenate processes work.
There is very little downtime associated with polynucleotides treatment with longer-lasting benefits; improvements are often appreciated for around 9 months. Polynucleotides are well suited for those looking for deep skin repair and rejuvenation rather than instant hydration and rejuvenation.
Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: What’s The Difference?
Both Profhilo and polynucleotides are injectable skin treatments that enhance skin texture and skin health, but as you’ve gathered there are some distinct differences. Let’s compare them side by side:
| Feature | Profhilo | Polynucleotides |
| Main benefits | Skin remodelling and deep hydration. | Skin regeneration and repair. |
| How it works | Ultra-pure hyaluronic acid (HA) spreads throughout the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production and hydration. | Highly purified DNA fragments repair skin cells, boost collagen, and reduce inflammation. |
| Best for | Crepey, dull, dehydrated skin. | Thinning, ageing skin that needs deep regeneration. |
| Treatment areas | Face, neck, hands, decolletage, and body. | Eyes, face, neck. Body areas can be treated but, in our experience, other treatments may offer better results for these areas, such as Sculptra. |
| Number of sessions | A full treatment is usually broken into 2 sessions, one month apart. | Usually 3 treatments, each one month apart. |
| Downtime | Minimal-most commonly small bumps at injection site for up to 24 hours. As with all injectables, there’s a risk of bruising. | Minimal-most commonly short-lived, mild swelling and/or pinkness immediately post treatment, in the treatment area. As with all injectables, there’s a risk of bruising. |
| How long do results last | Approximately 6 months. | Approximately 6-9 months |
Both polynucleotides and Profhilo offer natural-looking results, but one may be better suited to your needs and goals than the other. Luckily, both treatments can be incorporated into a skincare plan for you if it’s felt you’ll benefit from both, which leads me on to my next point...
Can You Have Polynucleotides And Profhilo Together?
Yes! Whilst they are certainly different treatments, Profhilo and Polynucleotide treatment can work beautifully together. With our decades of experience, we know that quite often the ultimate results come from a combination of data-backed treatments.
The combination of Profhilo’s deep hydration with hyaluronic acid (HA) and firming action on the skin with polynucleotides ability to strengthen and repair make them a powerful combination and could be part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan.
Your personal skin goals and requirements will determine the best approach for you. A consultation is the first step. You consultation allows you to discuss how you’d like to improve ageing skin and receive guidance from an experienced medical-aesthetic practitioner to determine a treatment plan that’s right for you.
Which of These Skin Treatments is Right for You?
As you’ve probably gathered by now the answer to this depends on your individual needs and your practitioner should give you guidance on this, but generally:
- If your skin is thinning and in need of repair and rejuvenation-Polynucleotides may be a good option.
- If your skin is dehydrated and loosing firmness-Profhilo may be for you.
- If you want the ultimate skin boost-consider combining both treatments.
At our Hertfordshire-based aesthetic clinic, we always take a personalised approach to skin rejuvenation. No matter if you’re interested in having Profhilo injection, a polynucleotide treatment, or perhaps a combination of both, our expert team can create a plan with your specific needs in mind.
